Quad Graphics to cut 27 Oklahoma jobs

(Daily Oklahoman, The Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 13--Quad Graphics, the Sussex, Wis., based commercial printer, is eliminating 550 jobs in five states, including 27 in Oklahoma City.

The reductions will take place this week and represent about 6 percent of the company's employees at the Oklahoma City plant, said Claire Ho, a company spokeswoman.

The company said it will shut down the equivalent of one plant's worth of capacity at nine printing plants nationwide. "The unfortunate part is that affects jobs. That's the difficult part of this decision," Ho said.

Joel Quadracci, Quad Graphics' president and chief executive officer, said every industry is facing unprecedented challenges because of the economy.

"While I had hoped to see some better indicators as we entered the New Year, it's clear that this economic downturn is going to be much longer and more severe than we expected," he said. "We are taking appropriate and prudent steps to reset our own capacity."

Employees will get transition help

Nationally, the company eliminated 550 jobs, or about 5.6 percent of its work force.

The job cuts affect both production and administrative workers.

Employees have been notified and will be provided transition packages that include pay, health benefits and assistance finding a new job, the company said.
