Panasonic develops world's slimmest 50-inch plasma display panel

(Kyodo News International (Tokyo) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 8--OSAKA -- Panasonic Corp. said Thursday it has developed the world's slimmest 50-inch plasma television display panel to reduce power consumption by two-thirds to levels of liquid crystal displays.

The company said it will seek to commercialize the slimmer plasma display in a year or two. The display will be exhibited at the International Consumer Electronics Show 2009 opening Thursday in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Although plasma TVs have been at a disadvantage against LCD TVs because of plasma panels' greater power consumption, Panasonic said it has restructured the panel to reduce power consumption to one-third of the traditional level.

The power consumption reduction has allowed Panasonic to cut the number of parts by 30 percent, contributing to slimming down the display. The slimmest part of the panel is only 8.8 millimeters thick.

Panasonic said it has also developed a technology to control light emissions of the panel, achieving the world's highest moving picture resolution of 1,080 lines.

The firm plans to adopt the slimmer size and higher resolution for larger plasma displays.

At the same time, Panasonic offered a new LCD TV to halve power consumption.

"Panasonic would like to focus on ecology and pursue products that are friendly to people and the earth and easier to use," said Managing Executive Officer Ken Morita.
