'Warner Music to drop DRM at FnacMusic, VirginMega'
(DMeurope Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
Warner Music France said it would drop DRM on its music catalogue sold
at French music retail websites FnacMusic and VirginMega during a
one-year experiment, writes AFP. The move comes the day after Apple
said it would end DRM on all music sold at iTunes by the end of March.
By dropping DRM, downloaded music can be listened to on all types of
music players, and can be transferred between devices. The development
is linked with the Creation and Internet law currently in adoption
process in France, which should include the obligation for record
labels to eventually drop DRM. Warner Music France president Thierry
Chassagne said he hoped to extend its collaboration with other partners
very soon and that DRM could be dropped on all downloading platforms at
the end of the trial period, and depending on the vote on the draft
law. Fnac said that it hoped to offer Sony-BMG and Universal Music
songs without DRM by the end of the first quarter. The retailer has
been offering DRM-free music from EMI and independent labels since 2007.
