BRIEF: Yorktowne lays off 70 workers

(Danville Register & Bee Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jan. 7--Seventy workers at Yorktowne Cabinetry's manufacturing plant in Ringgold were laid off Tuesday, according to a company spokesman.

A news release from the company states that on Oct. 28, in accordance with the Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act, Yorktowne provided letters informing its employees that if the home building industry continued to decline that it would need to reduce the number of employees currently working at the facility at 2000 Cane Creek Parkway in Ringgold.

"Unfortunately, the reductions at the Cane Creek facility will now be necessary due to the continued decline in the home building industry," the release states. "The duration of these reductions is uncertain at this time but may exceed six months. As the numbers of new home starts has drastically reduced this has negatively affected our business."

Effective Tuesday, 70 employees will be laid off, the company said, adding this is not a plant closure but merely an adjustment based on current business conditions.

Steve Ostasiewski, human resources manager at Yorktowne, declined to comment further on the reason behind the layoffs when contacted Tuesday. Yorktowne employed 165 workers before the layoffs, according to Ostasiewski.
