Myanmar to supply natural gas to China+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) YANGON, Dec. 29_(Kyodo) _ Myanmar has agreed to sell natural gas produced from its western offshore blocks to China via pipeline, state-run newspapers reported Monday.

The Export Gas Sales and Purchase Agreement was signed in Yangon on Dec. 24 between a seller, a consortium that operates the Shwe natural gas project at blocks A-1 and A-3 located off Myanmar's western Rakhine coast, and purchaser China National United Oil Corp., all three state-run newspapers in Myanmar said.

The consortium comprises the state-run Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise, South Korea's Daewoo International Corp. and Korea Gas Corp., and India's GAIL (India) Ltd. and ONGC Videsh Ltd., the reports said.

The natural gas produced from block A-1 is estimated to start flowing to China in 2013, according to China's Xinhua News Agency.

The Shwe field holds a gas reserve of 113.2 to 170 billion cubic meters, Xinhua said.

Reports from Beijing earlier said China will build oil and gas pipelines connecting western Myanmar with its southwestern Yunnan Province in 2009.

The project will include a $1 billion gas pipeline and a $1.5 billion oil pipeline, according to a Japanese report earlier this year.

Myanmar currently exports natural gas produced from its southern offshore blocks to Thailand, via pipeline, and earning about 40 percent of country's total export earnings.
