Honda Workers United donate to injured colleagues
(The Anniston Star Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Dec. 19--Workers seeking to form a union at Lincoln's Honda plant recently presented funds to injured coworkers.
The donations come from a day-long event the Honda Workers United put on in October.
They cooked barbecue, offered car washes and hosted a variety of activities for children and families.
On Dec. 13, they formally presented the money raised to seven injured workers who "are temporarily away from work because of their injuries," said Michael Verges, a Honda Workers United charity committee member.
The fundraiser was about giving back to the community and showing injured coworkers that others care, attendees said in October.
Verges said they plan to make the fundraiser an annual event. "If time permits, we will do it more if there are more people in need," he said.
Verges declined to release the amounts given out, but said seven people were presented with pre-paid Visa cards "purchased with the funds we raised."
Jerri Wilson of Talladega says she's been out of work for seven months and that the donation is a big help.
She said she feels "very blessed," to get the helping hand after a shoulder injury, and for the support members of Honda Workers United have offered to her. She said while she is now receiving workers' compensation, it is much less than what she made in wages and the donation will "definitely" help her out.
Verges said Honda workers who have been injured and are in need, especially those who are not receiving workers' compensation or disability, are encouraged to contact UAW Honda Workers United at (205) 763-1441 or (205) 763-1446.
