According to the company, UCLA was recognized for its BruinAlert system, which is built on AtHoc's IWSAlerts emergency notification solution. In 2007, UCLA deployed AtHoc IWSAlerts as part of its emergency management strategy to protect its campus population of more than 60,000 people. AtHoc IWSAlerts provides a comprehensive, unified system for UCLA that manages alert dissemination across multiple channels and physical devices, including network alerting to desktops, telephony alerting, email, SMS text messaging, campus sirens, radio, cable TV and California's Emergency Digital Information Service (EDIS). BruinAlert has already been used twice to alert the campus population about potentially dangerous situations, including the 5.8 magnitude earthquake that impacted Los Angeles in July 2008 and a wildfire near campus in October 2008, the company said. "While other universities are having difficulties creating an effective and reliable emergency notification capability, UCLA stands out for its progressive approach to emergency preparedness," said Simon Berman, vice president of product marketing for AtHoc. "Their unified deployment supports many alerting channels, all of which can be managed from a single console. This means the entire campus population can be alerted within minutes, wherever they are.
