Milwaukee Journal Sentinel column: Meet the people behind the opinions

Dec 07, 2008 (Milwaukee Journal Sentinel - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
It's where we get to have an opinion. We're talking about the editorial "we," and the Editorial Board.

Today in Crossroads, we dissect all the wondrous parts of the editorial pages for you, including what we do online. We do this because we're questioned frequently, not only on how we do things, but why. The package, we hope, will give you insight into both. And we include bios to acquaint you with the members of the Editorial Board, who generally toil in relative anonymity.

They do that for a specific reason. Editorials, one of the chief products of the board, are the institutional voice of the newspaper, derived from a consensus opinion of the board. That's why we don't put a lot of emphasis on who writes editorials because they are not the result of any single person's opinion, though our Quick Hit items will give you some glimpse into personality and stances.

Among the items we explain in Crossroads today:
--How the Editorial Board works.
--What goes into the making of an editorial.
--Just what is "Across the Board," on online feature.
--How and why we choose the letters to the editor we run.
--Community columnists and how you, too, might become one.
--How we choose what columns go into our daily Perspectives page.
--The role of our Reader Advisory Committee and the advisory hits they write for us.
--And, of course, those bios that tell who we are and why we do what we do, from the publisher to the person whose voice you will likely hear first when you call our department.

And because we're explaining how the Editorial Board and all its parts work, we thought we'd take this opportunity to also make a pitch for why good journalism matters. That's the topic of our Sunday editorial.

Take a look, and if you have any questions, plenty of numbers are provided in the package.
