Comics bring the funny to Onekama

ONEKAMA, Nov 21, 2008 (The Record-Eagle - McClatchy-Tribune Information Services via COMTEX) --
Mick Lazinski started his comedy career in the early 1980s, and watched as his profession peaked and plummeted.

Back then, Lazinski said, "There were 500 comics in the country and 50 of them were funny." Thousands more tried to break into the business and still only small number were any good, he said.

"It was wonderful for the first five, and six, seven years ... then it got overexposed with bad TV shows," Lazinski said.

With a multitude of stand-up programs on cable TV, even unfunny comics could get a gig, and "what happened is that people stopped going to comedy clubs," he said.

But Lazinski remains on the road, delivering one-liners and routines that riff on the economy, growing up and disciplining children. He'll bring his act to Shay's Chop House in Onekama on Nov. 29. Also featured is comedian Bill Squire.

Shay's began to offer comedy nights to the Manistee County outpost of Onekama about two years ago.
"We are in a tourist area. About this time, most of the snowbirds go back home. There's just not a whole lot going on here," said chef Rick Shay. "Comedy goes great with dinner."

Lazinski, of Las Vegas, said observing people is one place where he finds funny subject matter. In the grocery store line, in an elevator, listening to bits of conversation -- "what you catch is the truth," he said. Children, too, are sources for humor.

"That's what comedy is -- it's got to be true to be funny," he said. "People have to say, 'Yes, I've done the same thing.'"

Shay's schedules comedy nights about every other month. The show starts at 10 p.m. Tickets are $12 in advance, not including the price of dinner. For reservations, contact the restaurant at (231) 889-3121. For more information visit the Web site www.shayschophouse.com.
