AT&T Awards $1.4M in Grants to Help High School Dropout Initiatives Across the StateTRENTON, N.J., Nov 18, 2008 /PRNewswire-FirstCall via COMTEX/ -- AT&T Inc. (NYSE: T) today announced it will award four High School Success grants that total $1,413,664 over four years to support high school retention programs in New Jersey. The grant recipients are: -- Civic League of Greater New Brunswick -- $391, 910 for an alternate online self-paced learning credit recovery program to assist incoming 9th and 10th grade students in recouping credits in core failed subjects. -- Cumberland Empowerment Zone, Inc. -- $221,754 to support a coordinator for Communities in Schools, a community-based integrated program for at-risk students, to work with 9th and 10th graders at Bridgeton High School and Millville High School who must recover credits for failed academic courses. -- Princeton Center for Leadership Training, Inc. -- $400,000 to transition 9th graders in the Union City school district through the implementation and expansion of Peer Group Connection, a peer leadership and mentoring program. -- Rutgers University Foundation/Center for Strategic Urban Community Leadership -- $400,000 to fund a high school retention partnership with LEAP Academy University Charter School that addresses the academic and social factors that impact high school performance of 8-10 graders in Camden. "This generous grant will help us keep our most vulnerable youth in school and prepare them to become successful members of our workforce," said Senator Shirley K. Turner (D-15), Chair, Senate Education Committee. "It is an economic investment in which all New Jersey residents have a stake." Some 2,880 New Jersey students will participate with the four organizations who were awarded grants.
