Verizon Wireless Celebrates Thanksgiving in Washington Heights

NEW YORK, Nov. 13 /PRNewswire/ -- Hundreds of needy families will receive free turkeys, community leaders will be honored and the entire Washington Heights community is invited to celebrate Thanksgiving with Verizon Wireless next week when the company hosts "Llama a tu gente" at the El Morocco Nightclub, located at 3534 Broadway, on the corner of 145th Street. The event will be held on Thursday, November 20, from 4 to 8 p.m.

Organized in partnership with Alianza Dominicana, a non-profit community group that assists Latino families, the event is a continuation of Verizon Wireless' long-standing commitment to New York City neighborhoods. Twelve community leaders will be honored for their invaluable contributions to the Washington Heights community and Alianza Dominicana has selected 500 families to receive the turkeys at the conclusion of the event.

In addition, a bank of Verizon Wireless phones will be set up and attendees will be invited to make calls free of charge to friends and families both inside and outside of the U.S.

Parents and children are invited to celebrate the holiday with music as Oro Solido, Manikomio and Aguakate will add a festive flavor to the evening. Youngsters under the age of 20 must be accompanied by an adult.

"When Verizon Wireless presented us with the idea of organizing a community event for Thanksgiving to give away a turkey to each family in need, we felt honored and extremely happy," said Moises Perez of Alianza Dominicana. "In these difficult times, an event like this brings a message of hope and unity, something we always need, particularly at this time of year."

The evening will be highlighted by the lighting of a large Christmas tree, a symbolic kick-off of the holiday season and the start of a new annual tradition for Verizon Wireless in Washington Heights.

"Verizon Wireless has a long history of service to the communities in which we operate - here in New York City and across the nation," said Michael Scribner of Verizon Wireless. "We plan to open a new Verizon Wireless Communications Store here in Washington Heights later this year and this event is the perfect way for us to demonstrate how pleased we are to be joining the neighborhood.

"We've already touched Washington Heights residents through our HopeLine(R) community service program. HopeLine collects old wireless phones for recycling or resale and uses the proceeds to provide wireless phones and service for victims and to support local groups working to end domestic violence. We look forward to celebrating the holidays with Washington Heights' families and recognizing local leaders who work tirelessly on their behalf."
