Japan agrees with Peru to ink investment treaty+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, Nov. 10_(Kyodo) _ Japan and Peru agreed in principle on Monday to sign a bilateral treaty at an early date to increase protection for their investment in each other, Japanese officials said.

Japanese firms are showing interest in resource-rich Peru and the accord will pave the way for them to receive fair treatment when investing in the South American country.

The signing of the treaty between the two countries may take place as early as next week in Lima on the sidelines of the Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation forum, the officials said.

If realized, it will be the third investment treaty with a Latin American country for Japan, according to the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry.

Japan has economic partnership agreements, which include protection of investment, with Mexico and Chile in the region.

The investment treaty with Peru may lead to negotiations on an economic partnership agreement between the two countries in the near future, the officials said.
