Three firms to share Channel Tunnel repairs

(Contract Journal Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Vinci Energies, Freyssinet and Eurovia Travaux Ferroviaires (ETF) have won the ?46m contract to renovate the Channel Tunnel after last month's fire.

Eurotunnel has set the firms a deadline of February 2009 to complete restoration of the tunnel, which was damaged when a fire broke out on a freight train on 11 September.

Freyssinet has been appointed to look after civil engineering works, while ETF will be responsible for track and overhead wire restoration and Vinci Energies responsible for other equipment.

SETEC will supervise the project, while Vinci Energies will draft in subcontractor Axima to work on the tunnel's cooling system.

Eurotunnel chief executive and chairman Jacques Gounon said: "Eurotunnel has retained a group of companies who all have an excellent knowledge of the Channel Tunnel and whose recognised skills can guarantee the safety and speed of the works."
