Xilinx Team from Xi'an Jiao Tong University Takes Robocon Competition(Wireless News Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Xilinx announced that its programmable solutions enabled the second straight win for Xi'an Jiao Tong University in the seventh international Robocon competition, hosted in Pune, India. Robocon is an event in which engineering students compete to design the best robot for a specific challenge. Initiated by the Asia Pacific Broadcasting Union in 2002, the annual competition is designed to foster strategic thinking, leadership and team-building skills. The Xilinx sponsored team, from Xi'an Jiao Tung University, first won the right to represent China earlier this year at a national competition held in Beijing. The team advanced to the finals where they defeated 16 other teams from across the Middle East and Asia to win the Robocon 2008 competition. The first-place winners will be featured on the China Central Television Network over the National Day holiday this week. The team deployed a Xilinx Spartan-3E FPGA to connect the sensor and actuator systems to the on-board microprocessor while exploiting the high-performance DSP capabilities of a Spartan-3A DSP device to enable high-speed video detection. A Xilinx MicroBlaze soft processor acted as the central communication bridge connecting the robot's main subsystems. The team shared its knowledge and experience by publishing daily updates on its project blog, located on the Xilinx-sponsored open source hardware community (OPHC) website. "Xilinx FPGAs provided the ideal platform for our robotic design," said Professor Zuren Feng of Xi'an Jiao Tong University. "The flexible architecture allowed our team to implement multiple design iterations, allowing more creativity as we tested different design theories. We appreciate the generosity of the Xilinx University Program, encouraging our students to continue to innovate." "Xi'an Jiao Tong's victory in such a prestigious international contest clearly demonstrates the strong design ability of Chinese university students," said Kevin Xie, Xilinx University Program Manager in China. "We hope to continue to impact the future of electronic design in China's rapidly expanding high technology industry through our university program, by providing professors and students with hands-on experience and leading-edge programmable solutions."
