'Green' Web site offers education options for alternative energy field

(Montana Standard, The (Butte) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Sep. 28--A new Web portal unveiled this week aims to help college students study and find jobs in the alternative energy field.

Developed by the state Commerce Department and the University System, Montana Green Campus offers a host of options to students and the general public to "study green, work green and live green." The site is located at http://mtgreen.mus.edu/.

The idea is to unify all the campuses online course offerings in alternative energy studies, research and careers.

The difficulty of students traveling long distances to sit in a classroom made the idea of online teleconferencing more appealing, said Tyler Trevor, associate commissioner for planning, technology and communication with the university system.

More than 50 online degrees and more than 500 Internet classes are available through the university system.

The site also contains goals for the state to reduce its energy consumption. State offices have been charged by Gov. Brian Schweitzer with reducing energy consumption by 20 percent by the year 2010.

Schweitzer told the Board of Regents and about 50 university personnel at Tech on Friday that Montana is going to see about $500 billion of "in-sourcing" over the next five years with its alternative energy initiatives.

"You've all heard of out-sourcing jobs. This will bring jobs to Montana," he said.

"You have made remarkable strides in moving education forward over the last four years," Schweitzer told the regents. "We are in a position to move out of the petroleum energy field into the alternative energy field.

"Montana has a bull's-eye on its back for wind power and other alternative energy fields. Montana is in good standing to educate and re-educate those wanting to learn this technology." Editor Gerry O'Brien may be reached via e-mail at [email protected].
