Prysmian Launches New Multi-dwelling Unit Connectivity Accessories in North America![]() TMCnet Contributing Editor Prysmian, a provider of cables and systems for the energy and telecommunication industries, has launched a new range of multi-dwelling unit (MDU) connectivity accessories under the brand name CasaLink systems. These systems are specifically designed for North American multi-dwelling unit (MDU) applications and were developed to complement the launch of CasaLight Xtreme fiber and the Verticasa MDU cabling system in North America.
Prysmian has utilized its global fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) expertise, in order to reduce installation costs and as well minimize space requirements — within riser, closet and living areas in North American MDUs, the company said. Prysmian CasaLink system includes new MDU distribution cabinets, riser boxes, horizontal distribution and passive optical splitter boxes, customer termination boxes and pre-terminated customer drop cables.
CasaLink system’s new multi operator MDU distribution box (MMDB) facilitates in cross connecting the internal MDU cabling system with multiple external network providers. Building owners can construct and own the internal MDU cabling infrastructure with the help of cross connect point, which will placed in the basement of the building. This modular facility creates an opportunity for residential customers to connect to different FTTH providers and as well eliminates modification to the internal fiber infrastructure, says company.
CasaLink also incorporates a wide-range of established connectivity solutions for cable management in the riser, horizontal distribution and as well as customer premise termination. The company also has plans to release further expansions in the above range of connectivity solutions, in the coming months.
According to Prysmian, the combination of CasaLink accessories, CasaLight fiber and VertiCasa optical cabling will facilitate in developing a comprehensive end-to-end solution for the MDU market.
Prysmian CasaLight Xtreme fiber is a bend-optimized fiber targeted at FTTH applications, where extreme bending radii are unavoidable.
A Prysmian VertiCasa optical cable system, which incorporates main riser cable with up to 96 fibers, is used to connect users in high-rise buildings and multi-dwelling units (MDU). The fibers in main riser cable can be branched directly to individual subscribers on different floors of the MDU without the need for splicing of fiber within the riser of the building, says company.
Prysmian has already developed solutions for the MDU market in Europe.
Prysmian’s Energy Cables & Systems business division deals with submarine and underground cables for power transmission and distribution - for industrial applications and also for the distribution of electricity to residential and commercial buildings.
Prysmian’s Telecom Cables & Systems business division deals with optical cables and fibers, and as well as copper cables for video, data and voice transmission.
Prysmian claims to have subsidiaries in 36 countries, 54 plants in 21 countries, 7 Research & Development Centers in Europe, USA and South America, and a workforce of over 12,000 employees.
