NEC Deutschland GmbH: NEC super computer developments to aid industry
and research; New NEC LX Series combines cutting edge technology and
continual availability' with maximum five minutes downtime per year
(M2 PressWIRE Via Acquire Media NewsEdge)
RDATE:14072008
London -- NEC Deutschland GmbH has today announced updates to its
popular NEC LX Series (NEC HPC 144Rc-1 and NEC Express5800 FT) that
will further improve the performance, scalability and availability of
the cluster solution. The innovative updates will also deliver a
reduction in power consumption and server size.
The NEC HPC 144Rc-1 server update has enabled a theoretical maximum
performance of 29 teraflops, whilst the integration of new fault
tolerant server NEC Express5800 FT simultaneously provides an
availability of the master node of more than 99.999%.
"Both the industrial and scientific worlds are increasingly demanding
HPC clusters which are based on really cutting edge technology but are
also extremely reliable," explains Dr. Andreas Findling, Product Line
Manager and Technical Director of the Business IT Department at NEC
Deutschland GmbH. "Our strength lies in assembling and configuring high
quality components to form a turn-key high performance solution. We are
absolutely confident that NEC's state of the art HPC cluster
technologies offer unbeatable performance and data security."
The latest LX Series innovations at a glance:
The power of two servers
NEC is now offering the new NEC HPC 144Rc-1 server with 16 single cores
in just one 1U casing. The heart of the server comprises of two
motherboards, each with 2 Harpertown Series (Quad Core Intel Xeon
Series 5400) processors with a 1600 MHz FSB. This is the first Xeon
processor using the latest 45 nm Penryn architecture. The top end
specification provides for configuration of 2 x 32 GB RAM. ScaleMP
technology allows these 64 GB to be used in parallel as shared memory
by each of the 16 single cores, resulting in an extremely high
performance SMP server, with a theoretical top performance of over 200
gigaflops.
Continual availability
In this round of updates, NEC has become the first company to enable
the integration of a fault tolerant NEC server into the HPC cluster to
serve as the master node. The extremely high availability of these
servers means users can expect unscheduled downtime of less than 5
minutes a year, including repair, upgrade and general maintenance
times. With each component duplicated and Lockstep technology providing
for continuous synchronization, the system literally runs nonstop.
Damaged components can be exchanged as hot plug-ins.
Always Linux?
Following customer feedback, the LX Series can now be configured with
Microsoft HPC Server 2008 in addition to Linux.
OSCAR for NEC
NEC is an active member of the Open Source Cluster Applications
Resource (OSCAR), through which it assists in the shaping of the freely
accessible administration software, together with other industrial and
research partners.
NEC's commitment to furthering HPC administration capabilities ensures
that it will always be at the forefront of new developments in this
area, for example, NEC OSCAR Pro, the company's configurable cluster
software solution recently received certification as Intel Cluster
Ready, allowing it to be offered in connection with other vendors' HPC
clusters.
