6 Miners wounded in clash with Peru police
(EFE Ingles Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Lima, Jul 12 (EFE).- At least six miners suffered gunshot wounds on Saturday in a clash between workers at the Marsa mining company and more than 200 police in Peru's northern La Libertad region, union officials reported.
The secretary general of Peru's largest federation of mining unions, Luis Castillo, said that two of the victims, identified as Rosario Castillo Ramos and Miguel Yupanqui Ramos, "are in serious condition with bullet wounds in the stomach and the pancreas area."
The Marsa workers have been on strike since June 30 demanding a larger share of mining profits, Castillo said on Cadena Peruana de Noticias (CPN Radio) as he denounced the supposed aggressive attitude of the police.
Marsa, which has a monthly production schedule of 30,000 tons of mineral, has some 2,000 workers operating under a system of contractors, according to the company's Web site.
Protests by miners, students, farmers and other government opponents have been held across Peru in recent weeks to demand better income distribution in the country, where 40 percent of the population remains poor despite rapid economic growth under free-market policies. EFE
