Hokkaido-Sakhalin fiber-optic line begins operations+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) TOKYO, July 3_(Kyodo) _ NTT Communications Corp. announced Thursday that it and Russian partner TransTeleCom Co. started operations of their 570-kilometer undersea fiber-optic cable line between Hokkaido and Sakhalin.



The new system with a throughput of 640 gigabits per second is connected to the Russian company's 55,000-km network, giving the Japanese firm its shortest telecom link between Japan and Europe, according to NTT Communications. Other Japan-Europe links run via South Asia and the United States.

The Hokkaido-Sakhalin Cable System, which runs between Ishikari in Hokkaido and Nevelsk on Sakhalin, will enable NTT Communications to offer a better global leased line service by reducing its round-trip transmission delay by 20-30 percent, the company said. It began soliciting orders for the improved service the same day.



NTT Communications will add the new fiber-optic link in August to the company's backbone network used for its global IP-VPN corporate data communications service.

The new route will also become part of the network that the company's Internet access service shares with other major Internet service providers worldwide so as to improve its existing Internet service, the company said.

TransTeleCom, founded in 1997, is a wholly owned subsidiary of a state-run Russian railway firm and a major player in the country's telecom industry.
