AT&T names new head of its Oklahoma division

(Daily Oklahoman, The (KRT) Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Jun. 26--AT&T Inc. has named a successor for Don Cain, its Oklahoma president who recently was named to the same position for AT&T in Texas.

The telecommunications giant named Bryan Gonterman to succeed Cain, who served as Oklahoma president for the company since 2003.

Gonterman, 36, began his career with AT&T, then SBC, in 1999 and progressed through a series of jobs in Dallas, Austin and San Antonio. He most recently has served as assistant vice president for telecom operations and shared services in San Antonio, helping to plan, build and maintain AT&T's domestic and global network.

In his previous positions in Austin, Gonterman was responsible for legislative activities and regulatory policy for AT&T Texas.

"I'm quite excited about the opportunity, so I'm very much looking forward to getting up to Oklahoma as soon as possible," Gonterman said in a telephone interview on Wednesday.

About his duties

Gonterman will assume the Oklahoma position as of July 1, he said.

He was briefed on the duties of the position by Cain on Wednesday.

Much of the job as AT&T's Oklahoma president involves working with elected officials and regulators at the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, although Gonterman said he accepts the position without any specific public policy goals for the company.

"The company has worked well in the past with public policy officials, both elected and appointed officials, as well as public policy makers," Gunterman said. "AT&T is very happy with the progress that Oklahoma has made and the help that we've been able to provide in advancing the development of the state.

"We look very much forward to continuing that relationship."

Bennett Abbott, chief of telecom for the Oklahoma Corporation Commission, did not return a call Wednesday seeking comment on the appointment.

Gonterman is a graduate of Southern Illinois University at Edwardsville, earning a degree in finance. He later worked for Lucent Technologies in Carrollton, Texas, handling network operations and business customer support functions.

Gonterman and wife Andrea have two daughters, Sophia and Isabella.
