Infonetics Research: New white paper evaluates if/when service providers should upgrade to 40G

(Marketwire Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) CAMPBELL, CA, June 12 / MARKET WIRE/ --

Communications market research firm Infonetics Research announced a white
paper today detailing the advantages and disadvantages of various solutions
on the market that allow carriers to upgrade their optical networks to 40G
to more efficiently handle the ever-growing bandwidth needs of consumers
and businesses.

The white paper, Cost
Considerations in 40G Networks, examines the 4 main modulation schemes
being used or considered for 40G and 100G upgrades, including Duo-Binary,
DPSK, DQPSK, and DP-QPSK. Each of these techniques attempts to minimize the
various problems inherent in pushing more data through optical fiber, while
minimizing the cost of the equipment.

"Today, optical backbones and metro core networks are predominantly 10G, on
the verge of moving to 40G. But the challenges in the previous move from
2.5G to 10G are minor compared to those of moving from 10G to 40G, and the
challenges moving on to 100G are even more daunting. Carriers would like to
upgrade to 40G by just inserting new 40G cards into their existing 10G WDM
systems, but this may not be possible. The ideal solution for upgrading to
40G (and 100G), would be one that doesn't require changing the network
design, buying totally new equipment, or investing in new, expensive
fiber," said Michael
Howard, principal analyst at Infonetics Research and author of the
white paper.

Infonetics' white paper includes a 2-page Checklist of 40G Purchase
Considerations and addresses key questions such as:

-- What is driving the bandwidth growth in networks today and in the next
few years?
-- What are the 3 basic challenges when upgrading your network to 40G?
-- What are the advantages and disadvantages of present 40G offerings?

-- Should you upgrade to 40G, or wait for 100G?
