Plane makes emergency landing on Peruvian highway
(EFE Ingles Via Acquire Media NewsEdge) Lima, Apr 27 (EFE).- A passenger airplane that was overflying the well-known Nazca Lines with a group of Japanese tourists on board made an emergency landing on the Southern Pan-American Highway, Peru's main roadway, RPP radio reported Sunday.
The incident occurred after the April 9 crash of a tourist aircraft flying in the same area killed five French tourists.
Apparently, the plane belonging to Aerocondor airline suffered a mechanical problem and had to descend to the highway, where it touched down safely but caused traffic backups in the capital-bound lanes.
Located in the Ica region, on the southern Peruvian coast, are the Nazca Lines, which are so large that they can only be seen clearly from the air. They were created by ancient peoples of the region and were studied for decades by the late German expert Maria Reiche, who hypothesized that they were designed to be a gigantic lunar calendar.
The air route over the area is only flown by small aviation firms, which in recent months have suffered several accidents and forced landings on the Pan-American Highway.
