Fiber-optic line users exceed ADSL users for Internet connection in Japan
(Kyodo News International (Tokyo) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Apr. 18--TOKYO -- A government poll showed Friday that the number of households using fiber-optic lines for Internet connection has exceeded that of households using slower asymmetric digital subscriber lines, or ADSL, for the first time in Japan.
Fiber-optic line users at the end of last year accounted for 31.3 percent of households polled in January by the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications, up 4.1 percentage points from a year earlier. The percentage for users of cable television lines for Internet connection also increased to 16.6 percent from 12.5 percent.
The percentage for ADSL users dropped to 18.9 percent from 27.7 percent.
The poll, which covered 3,640 households, showed notable gaps between regional household Internet diffusion rates. The rate stood at 80.8 percent for the southern Kanto region including Tokyo and 75.4 percent for the Tokai region including Aichi Prefecture, against 66.8 percent for northeastern Japan and 69.9 percent for Kyushu and Okinawa in southwestern Japan.
The poll also found that the diffusion rate tripled from a year earlier to 21.6 percent for filtering services for juvenile mobile phone users to block access to Internet sites with objectionable content.
The result came as the minister of internal affairs and communications asked mobile phone service providers to toughen measures against such sites, a ministry official said.
