Nortel signs agreement to provide VoIP solution for Clearwire

(Corporate IT Update Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)
A contract to deliver a complete carrier VoIP solution to provide a
residential VoIP service to the US customers of Clearwire, a provider
of portable and reliable wireless high-speed Internet service, has been
signed by communications solutions provider Nortel (NYSE:NT) (TSX:NT).

Clearwire currently provides an Internet Phone Service in 37 of its 46
US markets and works with customers' existing high-speed Internet
access to provide unlimited local and long-distance calling from a
regular telephone. Nortel claimed its solution will provide end-to-end
carrier VoIP infrastructure for Clearwire's service, while establishing
a base from which Clearwire can evolve its network to deliver converged
fixed and mobile services.

According to Nortel, the solution is based on its Application Server
(AS) 5200 to deliver SIP applications including voice, call management,
desktop video calling, collaboration tools and personalisation
services. Nortel said it will also provide its Communication Server
2000, an IP multimedia softswitch which delivers network infrastructure
services and supports voice and multimedia features based on the open,
industry-standard SIP protocol.

In addition, Nortel will provide services to Clearwire from its Global
Services offering, to include network engineering, multi-vendor network
integration, network deployment and support.
