More than 1,500 register for Wikilengua in less than 24 hours

(EFE Ingles Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Madrid, Jan 11 (EFE).- More than 1,500 people have already registered as users of Wikilengua, the new Internet site created by Fundeu, the arbiter of the use of the Spanish language.

Copy editors, linguists, journalists, teachers and graphic designers will be some of the users interested in accessing this new tool, which seeks to become the chief online center for knowledge of the Spanish language.

Fundeu announced Friday, a day after presenting Wikilengua, that the site has received some 35,000 hits and more than 160,000 pages have been consulted.

Fundeu director general Joaquin M?ller expressed his satisfaction with the response of users, who he hopes will help enrich the site's content with their contributions.

During the presentation of the Web site at Casa de America on Thursday night, Alex Grijelmo, CEO of Spain's Agencia Efe news service and vice president of Fundeu, said that Wikilengua seeks to be a guide alerting to possible errors and an aid for the media.

Victor Garcia de La Concha, president of the Royal Academy of the Spanish Language, called it "an excellent means to contribute elements of construction to this open encyclopedia that, starting now, is on the Internet."

The Wikilengua Web site (www.wikilengua.org) was activated for the first time for a trial period last August and on its second day received 40,000 hits. EFE
