STAR-SONY ERICSSON TIE-UP FOR MOBILE TV (Sony Ericsson to embed Star's Plus application on its Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets)

(India Business Insight Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Star India has roped in Sony Ericsson, a handset manufacturer, to embed Star's mobile TV application, Plus, on two of Sony Ericsson's range of phones from Nov 2007. Star had launched Plus in May 2007. Sony Ericsson will embed the Plus application on its Walkman and Cyber-shot handsets enabling users to access to specially created video clips lasting 1-2 minutes. Star India is digitising its content through Tangerine Digital, OnMobile, and IMImobile.

The motive is to take it to multiple platforms.

Star has a subscriber base of 40,000 for its Plus application through Hutch, Idea, Bharat Sanchar Nigam Ltd (BSNL), Spice, and Mahanagar Telephone Nigam Ltd (MTNL). Star expects the deal with Sony Ericsson will help increase the subscriber base. As Plus is available on other handsets also, Star and Sony Ericsson are offering incentives to purchasers by pre-loading exclusively created mobile video clips on the phones. Users will also have access to a Sony Ericsson zone on the Plus application.

Star India's Plus application is free to download, but the content is charged at Rs30 a month with about 200 clips available for download.
