Global Market for Nanoparticles in Energy, Catalysis & Structural Applications Expected to Reach over $1.3 Billion by 2012

WELLESLEY, Mass. --(Business Wire)-- According to a new technical market research report, NANOSTRUCTURED MATERIALS FOR ENERGY, CATALYSIS & STRUCTURAL APPLICATIONS (NAN017E) from BCC Research (www.bccresearch.com), the global market for nanoparticles in energy, catalysis & structural applications will be worth $364.9 million in 2007. This is expected to increase to over $1.3 billion by 2012, a compound average annual growth rate (CAGR) of 29.8%.

The market is broken down into applications of energy, catalysis and structural applications. Of these, catalytic applications account for the bulk of the market. Worth an estimated $200.6 million in 2007, this segment is growing at a slower rate than either energy or structural applications. As a result, catalysis applications' market share is projected to drop to 26.6% by 2012 and be worth $357.3 million.

Energy applications' share should grow to 45% of the market by the end of 2012. Worth an estimated $58.8 million in 2007, this segment should reach $604.2 million in 2012, for a CAGR of 59.4%. Structural applications' share of the market will also increase to 28.4% in 2012.

Within these three broad application segments, four specific applications stand out. These include refining and petrochemicals production, photocatalytic and chemical decontamination, and non-stick coatings, which respectively accounted for 43.4%, 13.9%, and 13.2% of the market in 2006. The fourth noteworthy application segment is rechargeable batteries, the market share of which is projected to grow from zero in 2006 to 31.7% by 2012.

The nanoparticulate materials that generated the largest dollar sales in 2006 were titanium dioxide ($44 million), alumina ($34 million), aluminum and platinum ($24 million each). All of these materials are projected to grow at rates well below that of the market as a whole. As a result, all of these materials are expected to lose dollar market share from 2006 to 2012. The big gainer is lithium titanate spinel. Its share of the market is projected to grow from zero in 2006 to nearly 32% in 2012.
