It's just Dhani's tribute
(Malay Mail Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) THE furore over a song by Indonesian rock giants Dewa 19, claimed to be plagiarised from another song by a Dutch band, turned out to be a misunderstanding.
Titled Cintaku Tertinggal Di Malaysia, the single was made available as an exclusive download for Celcom's Channel X subscribers.
Republik Cinta Management representative W.P.
Tang yesterday confi rmed the song was a cover of Ruthless Queen, a hit for Kayak, a Dutch progressive rock band in 1978.
"The song has always been one of frontman Ahmad Dhani's favourites, and he always wanted to do a cover version of it," said Tang.
"I suggested to him that this was the opportunity for him to record it.
He decided to come up with new lyrics, and the song was re-titled Cintaku Tertinggal Di Malaysia.
"It was impromptu and t song was recorded in one take.
Dhani only copied down the lyrics of what he sang after the recording was done." Tang also revealed that due to immense interest in the song, it will be included in the band's next album.
"Since the song was released exclusively in Malaysia, Dewa 19's fans from other countries have been asking for it too.
And the last time I spoke to Dhani, he confi rmed it would be included in their next album." Saying the misunderstanding among many fans that Dewa had ripped off Kayak was understandable.
"After all, it was only available via download, thus resulting in absence of credits to the author of the song.
"When we release the song in physical form, as in the album, the credits will tell the story of how it's a tribute from Dhani to one of his favourite songs from a band he admired." At the announcement of Dewa 19's Malaysian Tour 2007, Tang explained that dates for the concerts in Malaysia were rescheduled to this month from last month, due to the band's busy schedule.
"The vocalist is busy recording tracks for his solo album, while Dhani has been keeping busy in the studio for Dewa's new album as well as Mulan Kwok's solo album.
"So it was only realistic that we find more appropriate dates where the band could focus on the tour, instead of making it a rush job." Dewa 19's Malaysian Tour 2007, presented by Channel X, covers five cities, kicking off in Kota Kinabalu (Stadium Likas, Dec 15) before making its way to Kuching (Stadium Perpaduan, Dec 16), Penang (Komtar-Geodesic Dome, Dec 17), Johor Baru (Stadium Tertutup, Dec 18) before its grand finale in Kuala Lumpur (Stadium Merdeka, Dec 22).
The opening leg in Sabah will feature performances from local acts such as Ella, Jinbara and Dewi Dewi from Indonesia while the closing will feature Sheila Majid and Rabbani collaborating with Dewa, with Kwok, a former member of Indonesian pop duo Ratu.
Concert tickets are available at Al-Ikhsan and Rock Corner outlets nationwide.
