Airline leaving Willard

(News-Gazette, The (Champaign-Urbana, IL) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Nov. 10--SAVOY -- Allegiant Air will stop offering direct flights to Las Vegas from Willard Airport in December, the airline announced Friday.

The announcement came less than three months after Allegiant began offering the scheduled service.

"Unfortunately, due to escalating fuel costs, we will end our service from Champaign," said Allegiant Air President Maurice J. Gallagher.

The airline has been operating flights from Willard twice a week, on Thursdays and Sundays, since Aug. 16.

The carrier's last day of scheduled service to Las Vegas from Willard will be Dec. 9. Customers with reservations for Dec. 13 and beyond will be contacted directly by Allegiant for reaccommodation, the airline said.

"We do apologize for any inconvenience this may cause our customers," Gallagher said. "We greatly appreciate the support the community and the airport's management team have shown us."

As recently as Oct. 23, Allegiant Air was adding service in Illinois. It announced on that date that it would begin service to Las Vegas from Williamson County Regional Airport in Marion on Feb. 1, 2008.

In August, Allegiant announced it would begin flights to Phoenix and Fort Lauderdale, Fla., from the Peoria airport, where it had already established successful service to Las Vegas.

Willard Airport still has seven American Eagle flights a day to Chicago's O'Hare Airport and one American Eagle flight a day to Dallas-Fort Worth. It also has two Northwest Airlink flights a day to Detroit.

Las Vegas-based Allegiant Travel Co. links travelers in small cities to leisure destinations such as Las Vegas, Phoenix and the Florida cities of Fort Lauderdale, Orlando and Tampa-St. Petersburg.

Its Allegiant Air subsidiary is a low-cost, all-jet passenger airline offering travel both on a stand-alone basis and bundled with hotel rooms, rental cars and other travel services.
