PacketVideo Is Founding Member of the Open Handset Alliance(Wireless News Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) In a major step forward for the rapid development of mobile media devices, PacketVideo Corp. (PV) has joined the Open Handset Alliance as a founding member, along with more than 30 other industry leaders. PV, a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless, is a creator of embedded software solutions that run the world's leading mobile entertainment services. PV is responsible for the multimedia sub-system to the Android platform, providing the essential media features for media device development. This includes the software code that enables playing and streaming standard formats, recording of images and video. This open-sourced code is called OpenCORE and will be distributed as part of the planned Android software developer's kit (SDK) offered by the Alliance. From OpenCORE, Alliance developers will be able to build devices that support music applications, video creation and playback, podcast services, real-time streaming and more. "PV is a company whose legacy is rooted in making the highest quality entertainment services available to the mobile user," said James C. Brailean, Ph.D. "We chose to be a part of the Open Handset Alliance to stimulate development of mobile media devices because entertainment should extend to where the consumer wants it and increasingly that's outside the home. "Collaborative development has always been a positive force in the mobile industry," said Brailean. "PV's collaborative spirit started with our role in international standards bodies to evolve how media is delivered in the mobile environment, and continues with the Alliance." PV, a subsidiary of NextWave Wireless, is the software company powering mobile multimedia services.
