Pier 1, QVC among bidders in Bombay Co. bankruptcy auction(Dallas Morning News, The (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Oct. 17--Liquidators weren't the only bidders for Bombay Co. last week. According to bankruptcy court documents, Fort Worth-based Pier 1 Imports Inc. and television shopping network QVC Inc. participated in the auction last week for bankrupt retailer Bombay Co. A spokeswoman for Pier 1 Imports said the company had no comment. QVC officials couldn't be reached for comment. Home textile manufacturer Dan River Inc. also was among the list of more than 20 auction participants, mostly merchandise and real estate liquidators, listed in U.S. Bankruptcy Court records. A joint venture of Gordon Bros. Retail Partners and Hilco Merchant Resources submitted the winning bid last week for the U.S. inventory of the Fort Worth-based chain of home furnishings stores. Going-out-of-business sales at Bombay's U.S. stores could begin as early this week, the company said. Bombay operates 384 stores, including 13 in the Dallas area. It has 38 stores in Texas. Bombay Co. filed for Chapter 11 bankruptcy protection last month. The sale of its 57 Canadian stores, which will continue to operate under the Bombay name, is pending approval of an Ontario court. The winning bidder is a privately held Canadian home retailer that operates under the Bowring and Benix & Co. brands.
