Nortel: Metrogas Chile Deploys Unified Communications Solution with Nortel and Microsoft Unified Communications Facilitates Instant Collaboration, Furthering Productivity and Mobility

(M2 PressWIRE Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)
RDATE:25092007

SANTIAGO, Chile - Metrogas S.A., the largest natural gas distributor in
Chile, has implemented an advanced unified communications solution
including products and services from Nortel* [NYSE/TSX: NT] and
Microsoft. With this upgrade to unified communications, Metrogas will
now benefit from incorporating IP technology with desktop applications
to facilitate instant collaboration among its employees that furthers
productivity and efficiency.

Metrogas' customer contact center is expected to benefit the most from
the new unified communications solution through reduced response times
to customer requests, while improving the quality of those responses to
help increase sales, customer retention and satisfaction.

"One of the reasons we were most interested in integrating our
communications platform with our data infrastructure was to help
diminish the gap between incoming calls and the time to delivery of
services," said Carlo Rojas, chief of technology innovation at
Metrogas. "This innovative unified communications solution with Nortel
and Microsoft allows our representatives to receive telephone calls
anywhere they may be at anytime. This alignment between telephony and
data is crucial to improve response times."

"Through our alliance with Microsoft, we are able to provide Metrogas a
solution that delivers competitive advantage by simplifying and
transforming its business communications," said Alejandro Bourg,
director, Nortel and Microsoft Alliance for Nortel in the Caribbean and
Latin America. "And Nortel has teamed with local partners to provide
Metrogas with a smooth transition from its traditional phone system to
a reliable, feature-rich, software-based solution designed to help
improve productivity and reduce costs."

"For Microsoft each relationship is unique, and starts with developing
a shared vision for delivering value to customers.

Our unified communications solution with Nortel really breaks down the
barriers between voice, email, conferencing, video, and instant
messaging for our customers," said Antonio Budia, regional product
manager for Microsoft Latin America. "This cost-effective solution
makes the most of the technology that each company has to offer the
market. It really is the complete convergence of desktop office
functionality with advanced voice services."

The IP application will integrate more than 30 percent of Metrogas'
headquarters, factory and executive divisions, and will provide high
mobility to the sales area, which will be permanently available through
PDA's or RIM Blackberry devices with audio, video, voice messages and
e-mail capabilities.

The Nortel and Microsoft Innovative Communications Alliance unified
communications solution is based on Microsoft Office Live
Communications Server 2005 and its client application, Microsoft Office
Communicator 2005, along with Nortel Communication Server 1000E and
Nortel CallPilot unified messaging. Using core integration services
from the Nortel Global Services portfolio, these products are combined
to deliver full-featured telephony and unified communications
capabilities.

Since the formation of the Innovative Communications Alliance in July
2006, customers have purchased and deployed more than 430,000 licenses
of the joint technology.

Nortel's Global Services portfolio includes a full range of
applications, implementation, management and support for end-to-end
multi-vendor, multi-technology networks.
