HTC aims to smarten up market share in Malaysia

(Business Times (Malaysia) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) HIGH Tech Computer Corp (HTC), a smart phone and PDA phone devices manufacturer, expects to increase its Malaysian market share to 40 per cent by the end of this year, backed by its new smart phone.

HTC Malaysia sales manager S.K. Wong said the company hopes the new smart phone, named HTC TyTN II, can capture more than 10,000 buyers by the end of 2007.

"The company is still new in the country and hopes to strengthen its position in the mobile and technology industry," he said after the launch of HTC TyTN II in Kuala Lumpur yesterday.

HTC is a Taiwan-based manufacturer that started out as an outsourcing company, but grew to sell its own branded products. HTC owns Dopod as a subsidiary company.

Currently, HTC has about 27 per cent of the smart phone market in the country.

"As we managed to achieve the target of 10,000 units sold within two months for our previous smart phone, the HTC Touch, we are confident this new smart phone which is the improved version will sell better," Wong said.

The company plans to launch another two to three PDAs and smart phones by the end of this year.

"We have conducted consistent research and development (R&D) programmes in Taiwan and other Asian countries, to improvise our products and be a step ahead of others," he said.

The HTC TyTN II smart phone features Blackberry Connect 4.0 for Microsoft Windows Mobile, as well as HSDPA, GSM, GPRS, EDGE, Wi-Fi and Bluetooth connectivity.

The phone is targeted at mobile professionals and advanced mobile consumers, including young executives who can benefit from its powerful features, Wong said.

The HTC TyTN II will be on store shelves early October 2007, at a suggested retail price of RM3,088.
