F5 Selects Mu Security for Automated Security Analysis of Application Delivery Product Family

SUNNYVALE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Mu Security, a pioneer in the new security analyzer market, today announced that F5 (NASDAQ:FFIV), the global leader in application delivery networking, is deploying the Mu-4000 Security Analyzer to discover, document and eliminate potential security and robustness vulnerabilities for its BIG-IP and WANJet products. Leveraging the Mu-4000, F5 automates current vulnerability auditing and remediation processes throughout its product development lifecycle. As a result, F5 is ensuring its customers operate the most robust, high performance and secure systems built to remain resistant to hacker attacks and network downtime.

"As a leading provider of application security, optimization and availability solutions, our customer base depends on F5 products to maintain the highest levels of network availability, robustness and immunity to known and zero-day security breaches," said Patrick Jenny, VP of Development at F5. "By leveraging Mu's Security Analyzer throughout our product development cycles, we've added another new and critically important capability to our product security and design methodology to ensure F5 products and updates are 'battle tested' well in advance of commercial shipment."

F5 is bolstering its product design, development and quality assurance lifecycles using the Mu-4000 to meet key customer security metrics based on a broad and deep analysis of each product's attack surface. An attack surface considers any product's protocols, processes, data, and access rights as potential sources of security or robustness weaknesses.

F5 customizes its Mu-4000 analysis for development processes including testing through dynamically generated and non-random Protocol Mutations. For example, SIP analysis ensures optimal VoIP application performance, as well as security and robustness readiness throughout F5's comprehensive product line. By applying a rich suite of user-defined protocols over IPv4 and IPv6 transport, measurement and testing is automated throughout F5's product design, development and deployment phases, including product upgrades and patches. As a result, F5 is performing highly accurate and automated regression, trending and "negative testing."

Leading F5 products, such as the award-winning BIG-IP family, benefit from Mu-generated and published attacks to proactively identify potential vulnerabilities. In addition, the Mu-4000 helps to identify 0-day protocol implementation flaws. This comprehensive test and measurement reduces quality assurance test bed complexity and lowers F5's total cost of ownership by eliminating the need for additional, highly specialized resources.

"There's a real tug-of-war between business demands for ultra-secure reliable products and the competitive pressures on equipment vendors to bring new products and features to market quickly," said Adam Stein, Mu Security's vice president of marketing. "In many cases, these are conflicting demands. Savvy companies like F5 recognize its customers have no room for compromise or costly network downtime as tradeoffs for security readiness and product innovation. F5's broad application of the Mu-4000 showcases the considerable advantages gained through automating security analysis throughout the product development lifecycle."
