Tupelo airport eyes service to Cincinnati

(Northeast Mississippi Daily Journal (Tupelo, MS) (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Aug. 16--TUPELO -- Tupelo Regional Airport officials have started talks with with Delta Air Lines to discuss the possiblity of adding service to Cincinnati.

TRA Executive Director Terry Anderson said "an initial, very short discussion" was held recently about adding the route.

The airport is currently being served by Mesaba and Atlanta Southeast Airlines, regional carriers for Northwest and Delta, respectively.

The Tupelo-Cincinnati route would serve Toyota executives who might want to visit from the Toyota Motor Engineering and Manufacturing North America headquarters in nearby Erlanger, Ky.

Anderson said he doesn't know when the service would begin. His best guess is mid- to late spring, but is waiting for Toyota personnel to begin moving into their temporary offices at the Renasant Center for IDEAs business incubator. The space should be ready by October.

"So the serious discussion will begin" around that time, Anderson said in an e-mail ASA would not be able to provide the service because it does not fly to Cincinnati; therefore, Comair, another regional carrier for Delta, would provide the route. But the schedule for the connection has yet to be determined.

"The schedule would be somewhat integrated with current ASA to Atlanta service, in that, if one flight was missed through Cincinnati, then another flight through ATL could be used ... same day," explained Anderson.

"And it works conversely. The details are the difficult issue since connections and Tupelo destination cities must be factored into the equation. It could end up being a combination of Tupelo-Cincinnati and Tupelo-Atlanta service."
