Red Condor Blocks New Types of Spam in Attachments

ROHNERT PARK, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Red Condor announced it is successfully blocking two new spam campaigns impacting email users. It has blocked more than 2-million spam emails since a campaign was identified in late June to embed advertisements in attached Adobe Portable Document Format (PDF) files. And since late July, it has blocked more than 75,000 emails from a new campaign that embeds ads in zipped (compressed) Microsoft Excel documents. In both cases, Red Condor's security experts detected the campaigns when they were launched and quickly put new filters in place for their clients.

"Spammers have discovered that embedding images in attachments gets malicious email past many spam filtering solutions, and are now exploiting this new vulnerability," said Ron Longo, president and CEO of Red Condor. "Our security operations center monitors new incoming spam campaigns and updates our spam blocking capabilities 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

"They never stop coming up with new ways to get junk mail into your inbox," he added. "Hyper vigilance and rapid response to new types of spam is how Red Condor makes sure our customers only get the email they want, and nothing more."

Both the PDF and Excel spam campaigns were launched during non-business hours. But despite occurring on weekends, Red Condor immediately wrote, tested and deployed new filters to protect its customers. Spammers have continued to change the content, format and signatures of the attached files, and Red Condor has quickly reacted to these changes with filter updates.

Red Condor leverages its ability to capture up-to-the-minute information about security threats from around the world, and then applies defensive measures in real time to protect the company's client base. Its unique technology blocks spam and malicious email while letting valid email through with near 100 percent accuracy, so users can be confident in secure and reliable mail delivery. Its next generation Vx Technology(TM) links on-site appliances to Red Condor's powerful hosted network of servers. This provides contingency server resources even in the midst of large-scale spam attacks, and network resiliency in the case of a mail server being unreachable.

Red Condor's email security service is currently used by more than 7,000 domains. It processes more than 1-billion messages per week for more than a quarter-million mailboxes. The company's products are sold to both Internet service providers and through value-added resellers to businesses, government and education organizations.

Red Condor is a managed service provider of highly resilient email security systems for businesses, government agencies and service providers. Red Condor's email security eliminates spam, viruses, spyware, phishing schemes and other offensive content, with perimeter defense against denial-of-service and directory harvest attacks. Red Condor leverages up-to-the-minute security threat information from its worldwide sensor network, and then applies defensive measures in real time to protect the company's client base. Red Condor's revolutionary Vx Technology provides network-based load sharing and fail-over capabilities for customer appliances. The system's design has built-in zero tolerance for lost email, resulting in a less than 0.01% false-positive rate while achieving long-term spam block rates greater than 98%. This next generation technology is backed by a 24x7 customer care center staffed by email security experts at Red Condor's headquarters.
