C-COR And Comcast Media Center Bring VOD In a Box To Phonoscope

MONTEREY, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Phonoscope, an independent cable operator serving the Houston, Texas area, announced today that it will deploy on demand services using VOD In a Box(TM), a joint product developed by Comcast Media Center (CMC), a business unit of Comcast Cable, and C-COR Incorporated (NASDAQ:CCBL). Phonoscope will roll out on demand services to its subscribers this fall. VOD In a Box is a pre-integrated on demand solution designed to reduce the complexity, cost and time required to successfully deploy video on demand (VOD) in markets that serve 25,000 digital customers or fewer.

"VOD In a Box allows us to add a compelling package of on demand programming to our lineup of digital video services with an ROI that makes sense for a cable system of our size," said Rhonda Druke, president of Phonoscope. "By having CMC and C-COR integrate all the components and simplify the VOD operations, we are able to drop in on demand and quickly launch this very important competitive offering to our customer base."

The VOD In a Box solution covers all of the basic hardware and software elements required for a reliable and successful foray into and expansion of VOD services. Platform components include C-COR's n5(TM) Compact (n5C) On Demand server and nABLE(TM) software management platform and offer up to 1,200 hours of premium and free program content that is aggregated and managed by Comcast Media Center. VOD In a Box includes complete content aggregation, receiving equipment, storage and streaming hardware, a full suite of management software and tools as well as professional services, installation and support.

"Phonoscope is a great example of the market we intend to serve with VOD In a Box," said Gary Traver, COO of Comcast Media Center. "By combining C-COR's on demand platform with our ability to aggregate, manage and distribute highly popular VOD content, we can provide a highly cost effective alternative to locally managed VOD solutions."

"C-COR continues to expand its product lines that are designed to address the specific operational needs of all markets," said Michael Pohl, president, Global Strategies, C-COR. "Phonoscope will now be able to bring its customers the same competitive services, like video on demand, as the large operators quickly and without straining their resources."

VOD In a Box runs on C-COR's n5C Compact video server, built specifically to address the needs of smaller market VOD, and uses the nABLE back office management system, both components of the company's Unified Video Management and Delivery platform. nABLE is the industry's first interoperable back office on demand software and is the cornerstone of C-COR's Unified Video Management and Delivery Platform, providing complete service and content delivery of on demand, time-shifted TV, switched digital video, and linear and advanced advertising capabilities. C-COR's on demand product line is deployed in markets of all sizes around the world including New York and Los Angeles.

The CMC's content management service allows a cable system to accept content from multiple sources without the typical need to coordinate, manage and manipulate the content at each headend. VOD In a Box affiliates do not need an on-site asset management system or on-site content management personnel. The CMC's VOD operations team addresses all of the requirements for acquiring and managing the content, including creating and validating meta-data, pitching VOD content to the C-COR servers and providing 24/7 quality assurance monitoring. The CMC's VOD content management services also include a secure Internet portal that allows affiliates to track when programming has propagated from the CMC catcher successfully to the affiliate's VOD system, and it can list VOD assets by programmer or provide a total view of all VOD assets.
