Nokia Siemens to develop IPTV infrastructure for Oi

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Infrastructure provider Nokia Siemens Networks (NSN) has secured a contract to develop IPTV infrastructure for Brazil's largest fixed line operator Oi (NYSE: TNE), tech news service Computerworld reported.

Oi expects to launch IPTV in Rio de Janeiro at the end of this year, Computerworld reported. The value of the contract has not been disclosed.

NSN is a joint venture between Finnish mobile phone manufacturer Nokia (NYSE: NOK) and German equipment supplier Siemens (NYSE: SI) started on April 1 and has over 80 IPTV projects worldwide, especially in Europe and Asia. The contract with Oi is the consortium's first order for IPTV infrastructure in Latin America, Nokia Siemens sales director Nelson Wang was quoted as saying.

Due to regulatory restrictions that prohibit Brazil's telecoms operators from offering broadcast content, Oi will initially only provide video on demand.

However, NSN's infrastructure will allow Oi to truly broadcast if the law at sometime changes, according to Wang.

NSN estimates that there should be almost 1mn subscribers for video on demand in Brazil and 2.3mn in Latin America by 2010. This will jump to 1.8mn in Brazil and 4.6mn in Latin America by 2012, according to the company's research.

This could be seen as a small number, but represents considerable growth when compared with pay TV, Wang said.
