(AP) _ Nicole Richie's driving-under-the-influence trial was delayed Wednesday until Aug. 16 so a defense expert can challenge evidence in the case. Richie's lawyer, Shawn Chapman Holley, said in court that Dr. Terence Sean McGee will testify about tests and conclusions by drug experts used by prosecutors.



Sponsors Drop BET's `Hot Ghetto Mess'LOS ANGELES (AP) _ At least two companies have pulled ads from the debut of BET's "Hot Ghetto Mess," a series that critics say puts black stereotypes on display but the channel calls "a blend of tough love and social commentary." State Farm Insurance Cos. and Home Depot asked BET to drop their ads from the series debuting July 25, trade paper The Hollywood Reporter said Tuesday.

Daniel Radcliffe Says He's No Wild ChildNEW YORK (AP) _ Don't get your hopes up, gossip hounds. Daniel Radcliffe, who turns 18 later this month, isn't planning any trips to rehab or jail. "What everybody would love to see is me having ditched school and then just going wild," says Radcliffe, star of the "Harry Potter" movies, in the latest issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine, on newsstands Friday. "That's what I'm determined not to give them."


Report: Pavarotti Doing WellROME (AP) _ Luciano Pavarotti is "fighting like a lion" against his pancreatic cancer and is reacting well to radiotherapy, his wife told an Italian newspaper. "I can now say he is doing well," Nicoletta Mantovani said in an interview published Wednesday in the Italian daily La Stampa.

Claire Danes to Make Broadway DebutNEW YORK (AP) _ Henry Higgins now has his Eliza Doolittle. Claire Danes will portray the Cockney flower girl who blossoms into a lady in the Roundabout Theatre Company's upcoming Broadway revival of George Bernard Shaw's "Pygmalion." The production, which also stars Jefferson Mays as Higgins, opens Oct. 18 at the American Airlines Theatre. Preview performances begin Sept. 21. The director is David Grindley.

Pearlman Back in Orlando to Face ChargesORLANDO, Fla. (AP) _ The creator of the Backstreet Boys and 'N Sync is back in Florida to face charges of defrauding a bank out of $20 million. Lou Pearlman, 53, was escorted by federal marshals from Los Angeles to Orlando on Tuesday. He was being held in Orange County jail and was scheduled to have his first appearance before a judge Wednesday afternoon, Deputy U.S. Marshal Jimmy Disbrow said.

`Closer' in Top Spot in Cable RankingsRankings for the top 15 programs on cable networks as compiled by Nielsen Media Research for the week of July 2-8. Day and start time (EDT) are in parentheses. 1. "The Closer" (Monday, 9 p.m.), TNT, 5.14 million homes, 7.18 million viewers.

Report: John Cleese Selling RanchLOS ANGELES (AP) _ John Cleese, one of the founders of the Monty Python comedy troupe, is reportedly selling his sprawling Santa Barbara County horse ranch for $28 million. The nearly 16-acre spread in Montecito is called Stalloreggi, or "King's Stables." It has a 16,000-square-foot barn, Mediterranean-style main home with three bedrooms and four bathrooms, a view of the Santa Ynez Mountains and a swimming pool, the Los Angeles Times reported.

`Live Earth' Concerts No Big TV DrawNEW YORK (AP) _ Given a choice among the Police, John Mayer and Madonna on television or a summer's night out, millions of Americans chose the latter. The Live Earth concert, Al Gore's sprawling worldwide effort to raise environmental awareness, wasn't a big television draw. NBC's Saturday-night highlights show was seen by 2.75 million people, according to Nielsen Media Research, or fewer people than watched the soccer match between Argentina and Peru that night on Univision.

Character Actor Charles Lane DiesSANTA MONICA, Calif. (AP) _ Charles Lane, the prolific character actor whose name was little known but whose crotchety persona and roles in hundreds of films made him recognizable to generations of moviegoers, has died. He was 102. His son, Tom Lane, said he was talking with his father at 9 p.m. Monday. "He was lying in bed with his eyes real wide open," his son said. "Then he closed his eyes and stopped breathing."
