Kasabian join global concert
(Leicester Mercury Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Leicestershire rockers Kasabian are set to be a part of the biggest global concert in music history.
The band will join the UK Live Earth show, one of a series of star-studded concerts being held in major cities across the world today to highlight the threat of global warming.
More than 70,000 fans will descend on London's Wembley Stadium to hear music from the Red Hot Chili Peppers, Justin Timberlake, Duran Duran, the Black Eyed Peas, Keane and headline act Madonna.
The event, which includes gigs in New York, Sydney, Tokyo, Hamburg, Shanghai and Johannesburg, will be broadcast to more than two billion people worldwide.
Kasabian, who are about to release their third studio album, will be on stage in London.
Following a triumphant performance on the Pyramid Stage at the Glastonbury festival last month, the boys from Countesthorpe and Blaby are looking forward to playing Live Earth before they get up on stage once again at the Scottish festival T in the Park, tomorrow.
It means they have had to postpone a warm-up show at Glasgow's ABC that was also due to take place today.
Speaking in the Scottish paper, the Daily Record, guitarist Serge Pizzorno said: "It just wasn't possible to play in Glasgow that night because of the Live Earth gig. We would have played it but that would have meant getting a private jet which would have been missing the point.
"The effects of global warming can be seen by ourselves. We can be standing in a field somewhere in 40 degree heat one minute and the next minute there are thunderstorms.
"There will be fires in Italy and my missus is sat in a fur coat at home by the fire." Live Earth is the brainchild of former US vice-president and environmental crusader Al Gore.
He said: "By attracting an audience of billions we hope Live Earth will launch a global campaign giving a critical mass of people around the world the tools they need to help solve the climate crisis.
"But ultimately, corporations and governments must become global leaders taking decisive action to stop global warming." Performers include Joss Stone in Johannesburg, Sarah Brightman in Shanghai and The Police in New York.
Organiser Kevin Wall, who helped organise Live 8 in 2005, hopes the stars will spread the message that action needs to be taken to halt climate change.
