Subversion(TM) Named an Industry Leader by Independent Research Firm

BRISBANE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- CollabNet(R), the primary sponsor of the Subversion open source project and leading provider of collaborative software development, today announced that Subversion has, for the first time ever, been recognized as an industry leader in a recent Forrester Research report. Subversion was named sole leader in standalone SCM in the Forrester report, "The Forrester Wave(TM): Software Change and Configuration Management, Q2 2007" with multiple high scores. Forrester estimates that more than 250,000 users and 2,000 companies have begun using Subversion in the past year alone. Subversion, which was initiated and is still sponsored by CollabNet, continues to gain unprecedented market share against traditional Software Configuration Management (SCM) leaders, with a year-over-year growth rate of 265%.

Companies around the globe are turning to Subversion, backed by CollabNet's global support, training and consulting services, to manage and optimize deployments of Subversion for distributed development projects. Based on customer references Subversion received the highest scores for implementation time, including both installation and configuration. CollabNet enables customers to have Subversion up and running in less than one month's time. Its professional support services also reduce costs by making it possible for customers to maintain an administrator-to-user ratio as high as one administrator per 1,300 end-users.

Bill Portelli, CollabNet's CEO stated, "When CollabNet initiated the Subversion project in 2001 we recognized that the software industry was rapidly shifting to distributed and collaborative software development. Our initial goal was to simply build a better version of CVS. A more ambitious goal was to build the industry's best web based Software Configuration Management solution and make it available to all project teams so that they could effectively engage in decentralized software development. We knew that to be successful, we needed to extend our development processes outside of CollabNet and work with the open source community as well as all of our corporate business partners and clients. Six years later, the Forrester Wave(TM) Report recognizes CollabNet's strategic investment into Subversion as well as our chosen development process of being open with industry's best software developers."

The Forrester Wave report is a primary research report evaluating a list of vendors chosen by Forrester Research. It selects these vendors based on product fit, customer success and Forrester client demand. After examining past research, user requirements, and vendor and expert opinions, Forrester develops the initial evaluation criteria. To evaluate the vendors and their products against the established criteria, Forrester gathers details of product qualifications through a combination of lab evaluations, questionnaires, demos, and/or discussions with client references and then score the vendor based on a clearly defines scale.

Today, global collaboration and version management is essential to the software development lifecycle and Subversion is rapidly becoming the tool of choice for distributed and multi-site development organizations. Subversion earned top scores for features such as scalability, number of locations, shared workspace and remote access, all of which are crucial in global deployment. The largest deployments of Subversion are 7,500 users on a single instance, 30,000 users on multiple instances, more than 50 linked sites and 500 GB of data. Subversion truly enables global collaboration as even remote users have all the same functionality as local clients and can pull data from multiple repositories into a single workspace.

"At this point, Subversion is no longer something that is on the horizon; it really has arrived, and it has been embraced by application development organizations of all shapes and sizes," writes Forrester Researcher Carey Schwaber in "The Forrester Wave: Software Change and Configuration Management, Q2 2007" report.
