Encore starts low-cost laptop production

(BNamericas.com Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Indian hardware firm Encore has started the production of its low-cost laptop called Mobilis in Brazil, newspaper Valor Econmico reported.

Encore expects to produce 500,000 laptops in the country and the PC is expected to be available for purchase in July through local distributor Polishop.

Encore signed Brazilian broadcasting equipment manufacturer RF Telavo in January as a partner to manufacture the notebooks, which will be targeted at projects in the education sector.

The laptop is expected to have a cost of around 340 reais (US$174).

The Brazilian government has been reported to be in negotiations with Taiwanese PC manufacturer Quanta Computer and computer screen manufacturer Chimei to produce the low-cost laptops developed by the One Laptop Per Child (OLPC) association.

The government is also testing Intel's (Nasdaq: INTC) low-cost laptop Classmate PCs.
