Shares of Network Appliance Corp. fell in premarket trading Thursday May 24, 2007 after the network storage systems company issued fiscal first-quarter profit forecast that fell below Wall Street views. The guidance led a slew of analysts to cut their own projections for the Sunnyvale, Calif., company's June quarter, and to wonder what the disappointing forecast means as part of a larger picture of the U.S. economy. Laura Conigliaro of Goldman Sachs noted that Network Appliances is "the latest company to see business impact" from weak business spending in March, and said it raises questions about whether the impact is proportionately greater for the company than others that sell to U.S. companies. "Right now there are no definitive answers. Source checks on companies exposed to U.S. enterprise spending yield very little of interest for the first two months of the June quarter no major pricing yet and low levels of incentives, but nothing really changed on the margin," wrote Conigliaro, who has a "Neutral" rating on the shares. "Sources tell us that they wont have a real read until the month of June." She slashed her price target on the stock by 12.5 percent, to $35 from $40. Pacific Crest analyst Brent Bracelin reiterated a "Buy" rating on Network Appliances, suggesting investors load up on shares with the expected stock price dip on Thursday. But he also attributed the tepid guidance to several factors, including "macroeconomic uncertainty" and lowered his price target on the shares to $42 from $45. Network Appliance shares were down $6.51, or 17.1 percent, to $31.55, from their close Wednesday at $38.06. Also down in the early session were two companies that announced new stock offerings. Syntax-Brillian Corp., which makes liquid crystal display high-definition televisions, priced a public offering of 25.6 million common shares at $5.75 each, an 8 percent discount to Wednesday's closing price of $6.20. Shares gave up 20 cents, or 3.2 percent, to $6 premarket. And Evergreen Solar Inc., which makes solar power products, priced an offering of 15 million shares at $8.25 each, a 6 percent discount from Wednesday's closing price of $8.78. Shares gave up 24 cents, or 3 percent, to $8.54 premarket. On the positive side, shares of stun gun maker Taser International Inc. gained after the Scottsdale, Ariz., announced four new orders, three from police departments in the U.S. and one from an unidentified "international law enforcement agency" starting a new Taser program with a $1.4 million purchase. Shares added 53 cents, or 5.6 percent, to $10.07 in early trading, from their close Wednesday at $9.54. And chicken distributor Sanderson Farms Inc. was up after reporting a profit for the second quarter. The Laurel, Miss., company said higher poultry prices and increased production helped the company reverse a year-ago loss. Shares added $5.75, or 14.4 percent, to $45.74 premarket, from their close at $39.99 Wednesday.
