Recent research conducted by a team of faculty members of Tampere University of Technology in Finland analyzed and tested antennas for RFID ‘readers’. The research was published in an IEEE Applications and Practice Magazine article, titled “Read Range Performance Comparison Of Compact Reader Antennas For A Handheld UHF RFID Reader.” The article presents a performance comparison of compact reader antennas – including fractal ones – for use with a handheld ultra high frequency (UHF) radio frequency identification (RFID) reader unit. Among the results presented by the Tampere University team included that fractal antennas achieved superior read ranges when compared to other conventional designs. In some cases the increase in read ranges exceeded that of other antenna types by a factor of three. Such increases are substantial and translate to more reliable tag ‘reads’ and speed of processing RFID information. Fractals are geometric shapes that repeat over a variety of scales and have the property of “self similarity.” As space-filling contours, fractals are particularly effective when used in small areas because they permit electrically large features to be efficiently utilized in these confined areas. Dr. Nathan Cohen, a physicist, radio astronomer, and retired Boston University professor, discovered in 1988 that fractals possess useful antenna element characteristics.
