Fractal AntennaSCIENTISTS SHOW BENEFITS OF FRACTALS IN COMMERCIAL ANTENNA APPLICATION Article Highlights Fractal Antenna Advantage In RFID BEDFORD, Mass, May 10, 2007 – Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc., a leading supplier of solutions for the most demanding wireless applications, today reported a significant step in efforts to grow market acceptance of its fractal antenna and electronic technology: independent validation of the advantages of fractal antennas in a growing commercial application. Recent research conducted by a team of faculty members of Tampere University of Technology in Finland analyzed and tested antennas for RFID ‘readers’. The research was published in an IEEE The article presents a performance comparison of compact reader antennas – including fractal ones – for use with a handheld ultra high frequency Fractals are geometric shapes that repeat over a variety of scales and have the property of “self similarity.” As space-filling contours, fractals are particularly effective when used in small areas because they permit electrically large features to be efficiently utilized in these confined areas. Dr. Nathan Cohen, a physicist, radio astronomer, and retired Boston University professor, discovered in 1988 that fractals possess useful antenna element characteristics. Cohen is the Chief Technology Officer of Fractal Antenna Systems, Inc. As described by the Tampere University of Technology researchers, their work demonstrates the advantage of fractal antennas as valuable means of making better performing antennas, especially in the growing RFID marketplace. Such findings were first reported starting in 1995 by Fractal Antenna Systems’ scientists. “The independent research conducted by the Tampere University team – while completely impartial and not associated with Fractal Antenna Systems ¬– provides significant validation of the advantage of fractal techniques for antenna miniaturization and performance,” said Dr. Cohen. “We are pleased to see their research findings establishing further credibility for our technology, fully proprietary to us via patent grants.” About Fractal Antenna Systems Fractal Antenna Systems was founded by Dr. Nathan Cohen, and supplies products for the world’s most demanding wireless applications.
