Apollo:beam Scotty out
(Evening Standard Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) ANOTHER blow to the ailing National Gallery, following the shock resignation of director Charles Saumarez Smith after a power struggle with the board of trustees.
Now respected fine art magazine Apollo has called for Peter Scott, chairman of the National Gallery's trustees, to resign. "Scott and the trustees should be ashamed of having been responsible for the loss of a director of Dr Saumarez Smith's calibre," says the magazine in an editorial in its new issue out this week.
Saumarez Smith, who jumped ship to become chief executive of the rival Royal Academy, is praised for his "impressive achievements", such as his purchase of the Madonna of the Pinks in 2004 and his lobbying of Government to take more responsibility for museums.
"The National Gallery now hums with activity, and has a fresh sense of integration with the daily life of London, in both a physical and intellectual sense,"
says Apollo of Saumarez Smith's fiveyear stewardship. It concludes witheringly: "Is it too much to hope that Mr Scott will now do the decent thing and resign, to enable the new director of the National Gallery to build with freedom and imagination on Dr Saumarez Smith's legacy?"
