Intransa Delivers Industry's First Scalable 10 GbE Enterprise IP SAN

SAN JOSE, Calif. --(Business Wire)-- Intransa, the global leader of scalable, network-centric IP storage solutions, today introduced the Intransa StorStac PCU100, the storage industry's first scalable 10 GbE Enterprise IP SAN. The StorStac Storage System PCU100 (Performance Controller Unit 100) joins Intransa's StorStac System family and is specifically optimized for content rich server and network-based applications such as digital content and streaming data applications including video on-demand, IPTV, digital imaging, video surveillance and data mining.

"The competitive bar has been raised with the availability of Intransa's 10GbE StorStac PCU100," said Arun Taneja, Founder and analyst with The Taneja Group. "Intransa's making the right move by focusing on the most content heavy vertical markets. With the adoption of Intransa's 10GbE IP SANs in these markets companies can now network, consolidate and have access to rich media faster and in more locations than ever before."

The Intransa StorStac PCU100 addresses two trends in the enterprise SAN industry. Enterprise SANs based on iSCSI/IP standards have rapidly expanded to support mission-critical data storage and business applications in data centers. In addition, the need for high performance data throughput has increased as access to shared storage without disrupting content rich applications or users is on the rise. By utilizing a high performance storage system organizations with high bandwidth can independently scale performance and high availability by adding additional controllers or by increasing disk spindles for capacity to meet their needs.

"Extending the benefits of a high performance, high throughput IP storage system to customers with capacity-heavy applications has always been a priority for Intransa. And now, with the Intransa StorStac System customers with capacity-heavy applications have a choice," said Bud Broomhead, CEO of Intransa. "We have completed an extensive customer beta test program of our 10 GbE StorStac System and as a result, we now are delivering the highest performing and most scalable IP network storage on the market, completely road-tested in real world conditions to meet customer requirements."

The first beta systems of the 10GbE StorStac Storage System PCU100 began testing in January 2007 with multiple customers. All tests included two or more StorStac PCU100s and StorStac Storage Capacity Enclosures (SCE). The StorStac Storage system can be deployed with up to four networked 10GbE PCU100's or 2GbE PCU20 StorStac Controllers and 15 SCEs. All StorStac PCU100s and PCU20s are preloaded with Intransa's StorStac OS software and provided best-in-class system fault tolerance, based on Intransa's advanced N-Way active/active scalable architecture.

"I worked with Intransa for the past six months," said Douglas F. Gibbs, PhD, Pathology Bioinformatics Manager at the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor, who employed a Microsoft application environment with 3rd party software for the University's medical imaging application. "The StorStac IP SAN architecture and design has great advantages in terms of flexibility, redundancy and scalability. The logical separation of each drive as an individually addressable unit by virtue of the redundant interconnects is what makes these features possible and separates this product from iSCSI NAS devices. The GUI interface software makes it easy to configure and manage virtual volumes, and the ability to migrate, expand, contract, and failover live volumes is a big plus."

When talking about 10GbE, Dr. Gibbs continued, "The 10GbE infrastructure is what allows the StorStac System to overcome what would otherwise be front-end 'pipe' barriers to achieving maximum performance. Testing shows that the system lives up to potential. For verifiable, volume-to-volume, big data copies, the Intransa 10GbE is the fastest storage system that we have seen in our environment. In fact, it took some creativity to design studies that would reveal the limits of the Intransa SAN within the constraints of our test environment."

The StorStac PCU100 is the newest addition to Intransa's next generation StorStac System family, announced in March 2007. The StorStac family supports 1, 2 and now 10 GbE/second interfaces in the PCU20 and PCU100. Up to four PCU100s can be used in a single StorStac System. The newly-announced StorStac PCU100, utilizes a Neterion Xframe 10GbE iSCSI adaptor, and supports multiple SCEs that range in capacity from 3.75 through to 12 terabytes of RAID storage each and are architected to support 1 petabyte with ultra-high performance of up to 3,000 megabyte/second system throughput.

"By providing a 10GbE system Intransa can provide the performance to address customer requirements for high performance storage with capacity-laden applications in the enterprise," stated Broomhead. "In the past, customers found that the cost to support these applications was prohibitive and the implementations were overly complex. For the first time, IP network storage solutions can address these applications, without requiring the customer to give up any performance."

All of Intransa StorStac products are offered via systems integrators and valued added resellers, in the United States and internationally through the company's StorPartner Channel Partner Program.

"We have been offering Intransa solutions for some time to our customers in the Japanese market," said Jun Ikeda, vice president, sales and marketing, network solutions at StorPartner channel member Macnica Networks in Yokohama, Japan. "We expect that the new StorStac System is going to be of much interest to our customers in Asia Pacific, and Macnica has led the way by purchasing the first Intransa StorStac PCU100 systems in Asia Pacific for our customers."

The Intransa StorStac PCU100 includes StorStac OS software that delivers fail-over, load-balancing, volume management, snapshots and replications. All major components in the Intransa StorStac PCU100 are hot-swappable, field replaceable units and have redundant connections to the disk enclosures while providing data availability and accessibility by supporting multiple physical mirrors with flexible mirror management.

"Intransa's scalable architecture has always been unique in the IP SAN marketplace," said David Galton-Fenzi, group sales director at European Intransa distributor Zycko. "We expect that the higher performing StorStac System 2 and 10 GbE offerings are going to open up new markets for the two of us as partners, such as video surveillance, video on demand, and IPTV. This is a good match for Zycko, our customers and shows Zycko's continuing dedication to offering true best of breed technologies."

The complete StorStac System line, including the 2GbE PCU20 and 10GbE PCU100 controllers and SCE storage enclosures are immediately available through StorPartner channel program members worldwide. An entry StorStac System with one PCU20 and 4TB of RAID protected storage MSRP is $44,000, while a PCU100 system with 4TB has an MSRP of $76,400. Customers can add additional PCUs and SCEs for more capacity and performance. For example, a PCU100 with 24TB would have an MSRP of $132K, or with two PCU100s and 24TB would be $187,000K. StorPartner Channel Partner resellers and distributors may sell for less.
