Bank officials cited for leadership

(Business World (Philippines) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Equitable PCI Bank (EPCIB) Vice-Chairman and Executive Committee Chairman Teresita Sy-Coson and Banco de Oro Universal Bank (BDO) President Nestor V. Tan were joint winners of the recent The Asian Banker Leadership Achievement Award 2006 for the Philippines. The awarding ceremony was held in Jakarta, Indonesia.

Ms. Sy-Coson also received The Asian Banker Award for Women in the Financial Services Industry.

Ms. Sy-Coson and Mr. Tan were distinguished for their vision and leadership in transforming the emerging joint institution of BDO and EPCIB into a consolidated force built on positive synergies and financial strength.

"The merger of these two institutions will further raise the bar of competition for the Philippine banking sector, setting the pace for the entire industry to become more synchronized with the greater Asian financial services community by allowing only the highest standards of excellence in their institutions."

Ms. Sy-Coson and Mr. Tan, as with the rest of the select group of award recipients, underwent a rigorous screening process conducted by an international jury.

The panel was chaired by William Seidman, former chairman of the United States' Federal Deposit Insurance Corp. His co-members were David Eldon, chairman of the board of the Dubai International Financial Center Authority and former chairman of HSBC Asia-Pacific; and Brian Pitman, director at Morgan Stanley and former chairman and chief executive officer of Lloyds TSB.

Singapore-based The Asian Banker is considered as the region's premier provider of strategic business intelligence to the financial services community.

The awarding ceremony was held in conjunction with The Asian Banker Summit, an annual gathering of financial services industry professionals in the region. Winners were named under three categories: top commercial bankers, per country; skills-based awards, per business line in the financial services industry; and lifetime achievements.
