Announcements

* This year will mark the seventh year for eastern North Carolina's the Festival of Fun. This year's Festival of Fun is right around the corner, so mark your calendar for April 14 (raindate is April 15). Join us at Union Point Park from 10 a.m. -- 3 p.m. for a day full of games, arts and crafts, educational information and fun. Back by popular demand, the festival will feature inflatable rides, face painting, carnival food and games. The Festival of Fun has enjoyed growing attendance each year, with estimates in past years exceeding 10,000. For more information, call (252) 639-2902.


* The 2007 Neuse River Senior Games and Silver Arts will be held April 23 to May 3 at various locations in Craven County. Senior Games are for individuals 55 and over featuring competition in many Olympic sports. Silver Arts registrants can participate in Heritage, Literary, Performing or Visual Arts. Registration packets may be picked up from the Craven County Recreation and Parks Department at 406 Craven Street. The registration deadline is March 23. * American Hiking Society is hosting the Great Southeastern Hiking Festival, a four day event that expects to draw more than two thousand people to western North Carolina. The festival includes a conference at the Montreat Conference Center that will convene hikers and members of trail clubs from throughout the southeast and features more than 20 scheduled hikes, educational seminars for hikers and trail organizations, inspirational speakers and great regional entertainment. A large, free public festival punctuates the weekend on Saturday, May 3 in historic, downtown Black Mountain. Festival goers will be delighted by arts & crafts booths, food vendors, entertainers, and outdoor information and education see the Web site at http://GreatSEHikingFestival.org.

Baseball

* The New Bern Sunday School League is currently accepting registrations for the Cal Ripken Baseball League at the West New Bern Recreation Center, located at 1225 Pinetree Drive in New Bern. The league will be registering for the T-Ball League, ages 4 to 6, Rookie League, ages 8 and under, Minor League, ages 10 and under, and the Major League, ages 12 and under, with 60 foot bases. The league will also begin registration for a new league, for ages 12 and under, with 70 feet between bases.

Parents need to stop by the West New Bern Recreation Center and fill out a registration form and bring a copy of the child's birth certificate. * Registration for Havelock Babe Ruth Baseball is now underway. Registration will be held on all Saturdays in March between 10 a.m. and noon at the Havelock Recreation Center on Hwy 101. Havelock Babe Ruth is conducting registration for a 13-15-year-old league. Registration is $35 for the first player and $25 for each additional family member. New players must bring a birth certificate or other official form to verify their date of birth. We are also seeking volunteers to help us during the 2007 season.

Basketball

* An 18-and-up basketball tournament will be held April 7 and 8 at Savannah Middle School. The cost is $150 per team, and the first eight teams will be suspected. Each team is guaranteed two games. * Registration is open for the Ten Star All-Star Summer Basketball Camp and the Bryan Adrian Summer Basketball Camp. The Ten Star camp is by invitation only. Boys and girls ages 10 to 19 are eligible to apply. Past participants have included, among others, Michael Jordan Tim Duncan and Vince Carter. College scholarships are possible for those selected to the All-American Team. Camps are available nationwide, with a North Carolina camp held in Hickory. Boys and girls ages six to 18 are eligible to register for the Bryan Adrian Summer Camp. Locations for this camp are nationwide, but none are located in North Carolina. * The Twin Rivers YMCA Youth Basketball Season for grades kindergarten through sixth grade begins March 26 through June 2. The cost is $50 for members and $70 for non-members. Players will be given a t-shirt, however, they must provide all other equipment. Games are on Fridays and Saturdays. To register, come to the YMCA and sign up at the front desk. * The East Carolina Storm girls AAU basketball program will be conducting tryouts for all ages. Please call 252-521-2508 to obtain information regarding dates, times and locations for each age group. Your playing age is determined by what age you are on January 1, 2007.

Baton

* Craven County Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring a baton class for youth ages 3 and up. Classes are held weekly at Unity Christian Church on Thursdays at 5:30 p.m. Cost for the class is $35 per child or $25 for a family of two or more children. Fishing

* If you enjoy fishing, come join The East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club. We meet at 7 p.m. on the first Tuesday of each month at The Famous Subs and Pizza located at 2210 Neuse Blvd., in New Bern.

Membership is $30 per year and boat ownership is not required, as we need crewmembers also. At each meeting we bring in speakers to bring us up to date on the latest fishing methods and equipment. We hold nine tournaments each year fishing both inshore and off shore for Stripers, Cobia, Spanish, Dolphin, King Mackerel and other species. Flag Football

* Boys and Girls Clubs of America (BGCA) has teamed with the National Football League (NFL) and the NFL Players Association (NFLPA) to provide youth an opportunity to participate in recreational initiatives that develop leadership skills and build teamwork. Through the NFL Youth Football Fund, a charitable foundation created by the NFL and the NFLPA, the Boys & Girls Clubs of Coastal Carolina is one of 200 worldwide selected to receive a $2,500 grant to begin flag football programs for area high school girls and boys.

The program will run from March through May with games being held twice a week. The goal of the program is to have 4 teams (10 players per team) from each area high school (East Carteret, West Carteret, Croatan and Havelock) participate. Teams will play a regular "season" and advance to the "playoffs" and finally the Super Bowl". Members from the Boys & Girls Clubs will be going to area high schools within the next two weeks to present the program and sign up individuals and teams. The $2,500 grant money will support part of the program additional funding is needed to sponsor teams, pay for equipment and trophies. In addition to additional funding volunteers, trainers and coaches are also needed. Fishing

* Saturday, March 10, from 7 a.m. to 2 p.m. will be the Tenth Annual Hickory Shad Tournament as one of the 43 events at the 37th Annual Grifton Shad Festival. Registration and start will be at three area locations: NC Wildlife Boat Landing in Grifton, Maple Cypress, and Pitchkettle Outpost Landing. The entry fee is $40 per boat (no more than two persons per boat) and cash prizes will be given for the best weight per boat (ten fish limit) and the largest shad of the day. * The East Carolina Saltwater Fishing Club's Open House is coming up March 7 at Famous Subs and Pizza, 2210 Neuse Blvd. in New Bern. There will be free pizza for all members and guests. The Club fishes inshore and off for stripers, drum, trout, dolphin, spanish, king mackerel and other species. The Open House will feature Captain Ray Massengill from Oriental. Also guest speaker Jim Francisconi of NCMFD will speak on the North Carolina Artificial Reef Program. Golf

* The Amateur Golf Tour is looking for new members for the 2007 season starting March 31. The tour is open to men, women and junior players of any ability. Membership is $70 per season and each event costs $50 to $60. Prizes and trophies are awarded at each event. Fourteen events will be played in eastern North Carolina. The national final will be held in Hilton Head Island with about 500 players in Oct. Call Scott Veilleux for more information at 252-531-2953.

* The Fourth Annual Navy League of the United States Golf Tournament will be held on Monday, April 9 at Carolina Pines Country Club. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. followed by a noon shotgun start with a cash bar, dinner, and prizes awarded after completion of the tournament. The tournament is a foursome super-ball format (handicapped), with flights for men, women, and couples. The entry fee is $50 per player which includes green fees, cart, dinner, and prizes. Non-golfers may attend the dinner only for $15. The entry fee is a tax deductible donation benefiting the sea services and their dependents, plus the JNROTC programs at four area high schools. * Havelock Civitan Club is holding its ninth annual Four-Man Superball Golf Tournament on March 17. Men, women and seniors are invited. The cost is $50 per player and $200 per team, including greens fees, car, door prize ticket and meal. You may also sponsor a military golfer with an individual sponsorship ($50) or team sponsorship ($200). Call Mike Wilson at (252) 447-2718.

* On April 21 at Quaker Neck Country Club, the Bob Dillon Memorial Golf Tournament will be held. The event helps raise money for injured military and their families. The cost is $25 a person, which is due with the application. The four-person superball tournament is limited to 36 teams. Karate

* The Craven County Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring youth karate classes on Tuesdays at H.J. MacDonald Middle School in New Bern. Kayaking

* The Twin Rivers Paddle Club meets the second Tuesday of each month at the Craven County Administration Building at 7 p.m. The paddle club's main purpose is to unite persons interested in paddling in the New Bern and Craven area and to promote paddle sports in this region while maintaining a safe and responsible use of navigable waters. Lacrosse

* The New Bern Lacrosse Club will be conducting conditioning practice for paid members on Monday and Wednesday nights from 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Kafer Park on George Street behind the police station.

All players must have paid their $60 fee to the New Bern Lacrosse Booster Club and direct payment of $20 to U.S. Lacrosse for 2007 membership (mandatory). U.S. Lacrosse dues may be paid on-line at www.lacrosse.com.

If you have your own equipment, you may wear it for conditioning, but conditioning equipment will be provided. Player is responsible for cleats, shorts/warm up paints, t-shirt/sweatshirt, cup (mandatory) and mouth guard.

Running

* The eighth-annual MCAS Cherry Point Half Marathon is scheduled for Saturday, March 17. The public is invited to participate in one of MCAS Cherry Point's premiere athletic events encompassing a scenic 13.1-mile course through scenic areas aboard the air station as well as into the town of Havelock. The running course is on flat terrain, and presents an opportunity to compete with respective fitness levels from beginner to advanced competitors.

The event is now an entity of the "Grand Prix Series" athletic events in coordination with Camp Lejeune. Colleen Maloney, news anchor from WCTI-TV12 will emcee the event and all participants will receive a medal at the finish line, commemorative T-shirts and light refreshments. * The second annual Run for the River raced will take place on March 24. The race will help raise funds for a new Kinston waterfront for the historic waterway. A one mile fun run is on the list of events, as well as a one-mile run and eight kilometer race. Top male and female runners will compete for prize money ranging from $150 to $250 for first through third places in each of the six age divisions (19 and under, 20-29, 30-30, 40-49, 50-59 and 60+). * Pitt County's chapter of Habitat for Humanity will sponsor the Eighth Annual Home Run Race on March 24 at the City Hotel and Bistro in Greenville. It features a 5K USATF certified course for a road race and a one-mile fun run/walk. Both events begin at 8:30 a.m. All skill levels, including baby joggers and wheelchair racers. Senior Softball

* The Craven County Recreation and Parks Department is sponsoring a senior softball league for men ages 55 and better. * The Twin Rivers YMCA Spring Youth Soccer Season for ages three through eight begins March 26 and runs through June 2. The cost is $40 for members and $55 for non-members. Players will be provided a t-shirt, but they must provide their equipment, which includes socks, shoes, shorts and shin guards. Games are held on Saturdays. * New Bern Area Soccer Associations Spring Recreational Soccer Seasons games will run through April 14. We are holding late registration and still have openings for children born August 1, 1992 through July 31, 2002. Registration fees are as follows: Under 5 and Under 6 -- $46.00, Under 8 -- $50.00, Under 10 -- $60.00, and Under 12 and above -- $62.00. Uniforms are available at the time of registering your child for an additional $24, which includes shirt, shorts and socks. All players will need to have their own shin guards, cleats and a soccer ball. You may register your child at our office, by mail or email. Registration forms are available on our web site or at our office and must be accompanied by the registration fee and proof of age when submitted. * New Bern Area Babe Ruth baseball ages (13-15) will be registering players at West New Bern Recreation Center, located at 1225 Pinetree Drive in New Bern through March 4. Players must turn 13 by May 1, 2007 and cannot turn 16 before May 1, 2007. A copy of the player's birth certificate is required for proof of age. The cost of registration is $35. * New Bern Girls Babe Ruth Softball League will be holding late registration at Creekside Park in the Softball Complex concession stand on March 10 during draft day. Late registration times are from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Babe Ruth is fielding teams in the following age divisions: 8U, 10U, 12U, 14U, 16U and 18U. All players who are at least 5 years of age as of April 30, 2007, and not older than 18 years of age as of December 31, 2006 are eligible. First-time players are asked to bring a copy of your birth certificate for age verification. Sign-up fee is $35 per player which includes uniform. Forms will be available at registration. Special Olympics

* Special Olympics Craven County is sponsoring a number of sports this winter and spring. The sports offered for athletes 8 and older are bowling, basketball, aquatics, track and field and bocce. A number of local competitions are being held in basketball skills and track and field.

Table Tennis

* The West New Bern Recreation Center is offering a Table Tennis Club every Thursday evening from 6:30 p.m. until 9 p.m. Anyone interested in playing please come out to the center and participate. There is no coast, and the club is always looking for new members.
