Baseball: Former Red Sox right-hander Tomori signs with Chunichi+

(Japan Economic Newswire Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge)NAGOYA, Jan. 16_(Kyodo) _ Former Boston Red Sox right-hander Denney Tomori on Monday signed with the Chunichi Dragons on a contract carrying a 45 million yen annual salary plus performance-related bonuses.

Tomori left the Yokohama BayStars and signed with Boston in January on a minor-league contract with the hopes of playing in the major leagues.

The 38-year-old played for the Triple-A Pawtucket and Double-A Portland this past season but was unable to make the step up to the majors.

"I want to get rid of all the frustration from last year. Chunichi is a top level team and I will be competing hard for my position against the other relievers," said Tomori.

Tomori joined the Taiyo Whales, the forerunner of Yokohama, in 1987 from Konan high school in Okinawa as a first-round draft pick.

He joined the Seibu Lions in 1997 and helped the Lions capture the Pacific League title the following year, when he posted seven wins and had eight saves. He returned to Yokohama in 2003. The sidearmer has an 18-28 career record with 30 saves in Japan.
