Phone book company produces Spanish edition in Colorado

(Denver Post, The (KRT) Via Thomson Dialog NewsEdge) Jan. 12--Dex Media is saying "bienvenidos" -- welcome -- to the state's Hispanic community with Dex En Espaol, the company's first Spanish-only Yellow Pages in Colorado, unveiled Wednesday.

The 14-state phone-book company joined with Hispanic business owners to produce the new directory, said Christi Castellano, Dex En Espaol's product manager. It will continue to publish the 3-year-old bilingual Spanish-English Yellow Pages, she said.

At least one other company has published a Spanish-only telephone book -- Paginas Amarillas de Colorado, dubbed "the Latino's Guide." Targeting the Denver metro area's 33 percent Hispanic population just makes good business sense, said Elizabeth Suarez, owner of Xcelente Marketing and Advertising and a Denver Hispanic Chamber of Commerce member.

"Businesses are going out of their way to target the Hispanic market and realizing the importance of it," Suarez said. "I look forward to a product like this, where I want to go and get the items that I grew up with, from piatas to food." About 140,000 directories will be distributed in predominantly Hispanic neighborhoods and at community events.

Dex also rolled out a smaller version of its traditional directory Wednesday and the new "Getaways" travel magazine.

Formerly a division of Denver-based Qwest, Dex generated revenue of about $1.65 billion in 2004. Qwest sold the print and Internet directory service to R.H. Donnelley in a deal set to close Jan. 25.
